Why do people commit crime?

There is no one answer as to why people commit crime. There are many reasons people do it, some do it on the spur of the moment because the opportunity was right. Some people feel forced to do it, some are taught to through their environment, or in order to feed their family, when all other solutions known to them have failed, they see no other way than to steal something, sometimes hurting other people in the process. In some cases with serial killers, a person commits a crime for emotional reasons. In some cases somebody could have a health problem, a brain tumor for example that causes erratic behavior, in cases like this a person could be found guilty or not guilty, depending on a judge and the jury. Some people commit crimes because they have made a decision to make being a criminal their lifestyle, like in gangs for example. some more reasons are: power, lust, anger, jealousy, passion, boredom, peer pressure, temptation, social environment, gangs, upbringing, mental disorders/insanity, in some cases genetics, and lack of moral judgment and character.

  1. Hi Talia!
Thanks for posting your ideas on line here. Indeed, there is no "one" reason why people commit crime the reasons are far too complex. Is there a "general theory" that you could compile from your list of reasons? Could you state that "Talia's Complex Crime Theory" is that there are multivariate reasons for crime focused around genetics and lack of moral judgment? Thanks again
